Writing Software

Favorite Software

You don't need any of these to write an amazing story. These are just some of my favorites that I prefer to use!

Image that includes an S in a circle with the word "Scrivener" below it.
An orange image that says "Plottr" in white text, all caps.

Scrivener is my preferred drafting software. It lets me keep a lot of info in one place, plus has spaces for me to create easy access documents of cut scenes or to brainstorm. Plus I can put my documents for research inside of it, too.

Plottr has been one of my favorite software for creating a series bible! I'm a pantser, but still get a lot of value from its ability to keep up with all my character information, places, and all my other notes to keep up with my series. It's also incredibly useful for people who LOVE to plot.

Other Software

Microsoft Word is my favorite to use when editing my manuscript. Having the completed manuscript in a different software than Scrivener helps get me in the editing mindset. It's also used by professional editors, so it's a good investment when the time comes!

Microsoft Word

I use Google Docs to share my manuscript with my Critique partners and Beta Readers since it's free and has the comment feature. You can also set up the document so that it cannot be copied. It's a handy tool that some people enjoy also writing in, plus it's free.

Publish and Thrive is an amazing course that teaches all about self-publishing by the wonder self-published author, Sarra Cannon. She goes through what your goals are with publishing into the ins and outs of publishing on each platform. It's a must for new authors interested in self-publishing.

The HB90 Boot Camp is a course all about planning your life for 90 days at a time. 90 days is often much more manageable and lets you reevaluate what's working and what's not about your plans. It also teaches you how to calculate how much time you actually have versus how much time you THINK you have. It's the best course for planning!

It's thanks to this Brittany Wang's Author Website Boot Camp that this website exists today! Brittany Wang goes over everything in detail using Wix. I think this course is valuable even for people not interested in using Wix, but obviously you'll get the most out of it if you are.

This one is a bit different, as it's a free course on YouTube by Brandon Sanderson. He offers a lot of insight into writing that isn't deep diving into story structure like many other courses and novels.
